Krafty Kuts (Finger Lickin' Records) @ GLC - Wed 18th March

Krafty Kuts Info:
From humble beginnings Krafty Kuts is now one of the big players on the world’s club scene DJing alongside The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and even the Rolling Stones. Martin is unequivocally one of the hardest working DJs around. There is no end in sight to the meteoric rise of Krafty Kuts. So far in a glittering career he has gained dance music’s top accolades including Best International DJ at the Australian Dance Music Awards, Breakspoll’s Face of Breaks 2003 and Best Breaks DJ at the M8 Ibiza awards 2006, in only his first year as a resident on the white isle. A stunning haul at Breakspoll 2007 saw him claiming Best Album for his debut long player ‘Freakshow’, and Best DJ for a record third consecutive year and to cap it off, the richly deserved Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat Award that acknowledged his long journey to the acme of club culture.

Here's a bit more about Krafty;

When you enter a DJ'ing competition, having never DJ'd before, and get to the finals, you know you must have chosen the right career path - Krafty Kuts was born!

Krafty Kuts' first ventures on the wheels of steel occurred in the mid 80's when he was bitten by the hip-hop and Electro bug. It was during this period that he developed his cutting and scratching skills, which are now a trademark of his party rocking sets.

While Krafty Kuts was rocking down the house with his DJ skills, he was also busy working on his own music. In 1996 he was signed to FSUK, one of the Ministry of Sound's offshoot labels. 3 EP's were released to critical acclaim, along with 'Gimme the Funk'; a one-off release for Fatboy Slim's label Southern Fried that was hammered by every DJ worth their salt. The success of these releases led to Krafty Kuts becoming one of the most in demand remixers within the UK dance music scene. Today, the list of people Krafty Kuts has remixed reads like an A-List, including the likes of Jurassic 5, Utah Saints, Arthur Baker, Eric B & Rakim and more.

Whilst producing and remixing, Krafty Kuts has also managed to maintain his Djing commitments the world over, playing alongside such luminaries as Fatboy Slim, The Rolling Stones, The Prodigy, and Roni Size. Amazingly, Krafty still manages to hold down his residency club night at Supercharged.

Krafty's seminal music has been used for a Coca-Cola advert, Playstation 2, and for Guy Ritchie's film 'Mean Machine'. In 2003, he, along with production partner A.Skillz, released their album 'Tricka Technology' on Finger Lickin' Records to critical acclaim featuring hip hop legend Kurtis Blow as well as new talents Real Elements and ever reliable funky bass player Dr Luke.

By 1999, with his all-encompassing club style, blending beats and breaks across the board, honed to perfection, Martin entered the studio with Freddy Fresh, long standing studio partner Ed Solo and NY’s own Dr Luke. Together they produced a series of beats and skits that were destined to become the backbone of Finger Lickin’s legendary Finger Lickin Funk release.

With the demand for his records and club sets showing no sign of slowing down, Martin took a backseat with the labels and club promotion and flung himself headlong into non-stop touring and recording. Working solidly throughout 2006 Krafty completed his debut solo album, Freak Show. Once again the tracks featured a stellar cast of collaborators from the Scratch Perverts, Tim Deluxe and Dynamite MC, to long term associates A.Skillz, Ashley Slater and Dr Luke. Mirroring Krafty Kuts’ universal approach to partying and the dance-floor, the album moved through myriad tempos, taking in Acid, Breaks, Booty Bass and Funk with a consummate ease. Again the plaudits flooded in, with Freaksow gaining album of the month in DJ magazine and top marks across the board. The album’s lead single ‘Bass Phenomenon was a ubiquitous feel good anthem of the summer and its popularity proved such that it won DJ Magazine single of the year 2006. Still played world-wide the track has recently spawned its own remix competition. Following hard on its heels a Fabriclive compilation proved to be one of the series’ most popular instalments with Martin’s trademark eclectic nature shining through.

The Transporter Bridge

The Transporter Bridge

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge has been a symbol of the area since it was opened in 1911. There are only two other Transporter Bridges still in existence in Britain. These bridges are at Newport (Gwent), opened 1906 and Warrington, opened 1916.

The Middlesbrough Transporter is a total of 851 feet (259.3 metres) in length which makes it the longest of those remaining in the world. Its cantilever construction has three main bridge spans that give it its unique appearance. The bridge is, effectively, two almost independent structures joined at the centre of the River Tees. Each half of the bridge has an 'anchor' span of 140 feet (42.6 metres) and then cantilevers across the river some 285 feet (86.8 metres) from the tower leg to meet its twin from the opposite bank. The passenger gondola is suspended by steel cables and runs on a wheel and rail system approximately 160 feet (48.7 metres) above the River Tees. Whilst Middlesbrough's Transporter is the largest operational Transporter Bridge the largest bridge ever of this type is recorded as 1000 feet (304.7 metres) in length, built over the River Mersey near Widnes. That bridge closed in 1961 and has, sadly, now been demolished.

As far as we have been able to research, there have been some twenty Transporter Bridges constructed around the world of which only eleven still exist and a lesser number again are still in regular use. The first bridge, near Bilbao, Spain, opened in 1893. All the bridges were constructed in the twenty-three years between 1893 and 1916 and of the nine demolished structures an average life of thirty-six years was achieved.

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is fully operational and provides a regular quarter-hourly service between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence for 18 hours a day. This service is interrupted from time to time for routine maintenance works, with some lengthier closures for major refurbishment. It remains the largest of the Transporter Bridges operating worldwide, and provides a valuable public transport service, crossing the river in two minutes.

In December 1993, the bridge was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' highest honour, The Heritage Plaque, for engineering excellence, in recognition of the Council's efforts in keeping the bridge in good working order. Its historical importance was also recognised in 1985 by its listing as a Grade II* Listed Building and its prominence as a local landmark was further enhanced in 1993 by the installation of flood lights that operate during the winter months.

In April 1996 local government reorganisation transferred the ownership of the bridge to Middlesbrough Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council with Middlesbrough Council responsible for the day-to-day running and maintenance of the Bridge.

In recent years despite all the efforts of the cast of Auf Wiedersehen Pet, the bridge still remains the focal point of the River Tees. The TV show, which became an instant hit, showed the Transporter Bridge being disassembled and sent to Arizona in America. The people behind the programme obviously did a very good job on the computers as many Teessiders thought their beloved bridge was on its way across the Atlantic. However we won't be saying 'Auf Wiedersehen' to our bridge for a few more years yet.
Thanks to Middlesbrough Council Website for information :)
