Titans in the Sewers - 10.8.11

Sega Jenness hooks the woman up to the various clamps after removing her clothing and then injected her with the rohybnol to act with tranq she had just received. They were both cheap and readily available and would ensure her recollection of the events that were to happen and had..fuzzy at best. It took a while toclean and inspect the wound, the mind inside the Harbinger changing as it donned the odious skin covered armour and hydromag suit that was its second nature. It was in pain and the gurgling and moaning came out as cracles and pops throught the voice modulated mask. "Arise to hell.whore" it said with malice in its tone

Cole began to stir, her head pounded as she gradually opened her eyes, trying to focus as she realizes that something faceless is standing over her. It seemed like one of herown screamers had come to life before her while the girl's eyes travel over the dark figure almost dispassionatly. Narrowing her eyes her hands balls into fists of rage as she fought for control of herself. She could feel the clamps that held her tightly as she takes a breath. "Quietly her voice, lifted to the creature standing over her. "who are you?" she said simply as she looked past her to the room that entombed them both, searching for an escape, finding nothing immediatly she returned her questionable focus to the mask once more.

The Warden stirred. The writhe tentacle encroachment seems to pulse with the added influence of a summoned bubbling berth contracting and expanding the wall to give sudden life to what had been mildly solidified in its pasty transparency. It wasn't often that such a divine taste of morseled flesh deposited itself upon the scent of that dreaded air fumed out from the pained screams down in the depths below. Grounded, those poor souls remained seated like fixtures transfixed into horrified stone through the pipes that carried both a specter like chill and a sweltering African like heat from the opposing it with a wide grimaced smile of corrugated metal..Suddenly the wall would fully implode upon a staggering height that split the room for but a moment to make way for the Warden who had been lurking away whispering amongst the insects and the beast itself that remained a maw of madness nestled far beyond the reaches of the miserable one. Smells of that tired leather and haggard image easily conjures the Warden's ideal soldier of misery and the morsel that had been besieged to lay weary upon a chilled slab of rust. Such a slab was never kosher as it lent itself to an infectious design and the infectious laughter that marked the room with a droning hum of machinery just as the despotic tyrant made query among inhuman intonation groaning from the gurgled cybernetic folds stacking the neck with a rippled mass of leathery black cloth and an emptiness about what would lay inside as no real features could be sought upon first glance.

Sega Jenness replied in the odd, genderless voice that held the weird strain due to its injuries "I'm the last face you will ever see. I'm going to kill you. And I'm going to enjoy it." Moving to get the medical card, the atrocious metal table, skittering with whining metal wheels squishing blood worms on its way as it clanked and made a godawful racket. The sounds were not helped by the crusted brutal bone saws, pikes, mallets and medieval medical instruments that were piled on it. "First..." going for a speculum that looked almost slimy, yellow, green and brownish residue mixed with maroon actually getting flung off of it onto the ground as it brought the thing to its mask and feigned sniffing "vaginosis....left a tampon in. Crackwhores.." clucking a digitzed tongue "always forget to take the last one out and it just gets....full.." moving and retracting the blades on the gauntlets so that it could forcefully shove the woman's thighs apart, the filthy instrument jamming in between her labial folds into her cunt with relatively minor warning. Just as it it felt the pop like feeling of the lips giving way to sink the metal inside The Warden made his presence with the dread chill of the inhuman horrific laughter that seemed to seep through its armour to the bones of the Harbinger beneath. It once had been such a comfort but now...it was as if familiarity and sick loyalty had bred only a unique, albeit devoted contempt that sickened Sega. It stiffened..and turned, nodding only and looked back at the female "Aren't you lucky..." starting to crank the rusty device open so that the vagina would be like a gaping black maw as far as it could, though not enough to split the women, just stretch painfully. "You get to see a hysterectomy..maybe she's with child."

Cole grimaced as the filthy instrument was shoved into her without warning. the cold metal cranked wider...lips parting in a groan just as she turned her head seeing him as he seemed to slither into the room through

I've been trying to get more stable footage for stopmotion videos. Previously I attached the cam to my bike, but still got left/right wobbling occasionally, and it was tedious and tiring to wheel it slowly and try and keep it balanced. This is a solution: I got a cheap second-hand wheeled zimerframe, attached a Manfrotto Super clamp to the arm, then attached a tripod swivel head to that, and attached the cam to that.

Also, as I'm using an Olympus EPL1 camera which doesn't take a release cable, I've used a makeshift device that physically holds the shutter button down. It attaches to the tripod base with an adjustable arm over the shutter. It originally had an old traditional shutter cable attached, but I removed that and adapted it so the arm bit directly touches and holds down the shutter. I've added a rubber band to keep it in place.

Filming my new film

Filming my new film

Andrew and I have spent the past month preparing for our newest film, "Emerge From Dust". Andrew took this while I was setting up for a shot for the cemetery scene.

Kelly Moore (kmophoto.com) let me borrow his Nikon D3s for the shoot as long as I would assist him for a wedding downtown Chi-town (win-win for me). He's pretty much the coolest guy in the world. He also through the 14-24 ?/2.8, the 24-70 ?/2.8, and the new 50 ?/1.4 in the bag as well. Without him, I'm not sure we'd have a movie.

Here we set the camera on a dolly I made with my dad. It's a modified version of the traditional DIY dolly everyone sees. It runs on PVC pipes with 16 skateboards wheels. This dolly however is extremely heavy duty. It takes two people to transport as well as operate. I made it in the shape of a 'T' so that I could throw on a fully extended tripod. Also, the wheels are attached by two very large iron frames. I also attached a handle so that one person can push/pull.

In this shot we also set up a small monitor for the cameraman and another monitor for review. In the corner of this shot, you can see we set up a cart for our equipment and to review the shot on the other monitor.

Haha, I'm trying to make this whole set-up sound very cool. Haha. Hope it's working.

On the D3s:
-80-200mm ?/2.8
-Manfrotto head
-Calumet Travelpro legs (I think that's what their called)
-(2) 20GB Sandisk Extreme cards

This Shot:
Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: Nikkor 24-70mm ?/2.8
Exposure: 1/640 at ?/2.8
ISO Speed: 200
Focal Length: 32mm

Enjoy!

This is the farthest south that I went, just south enough to begin to see the ridge of mountains there at the right. I just wasn't interested in going down slightly further south and shooting more, I've taken shots there 5,000 times. Not even to compare with film. Let's say that having actually ridden down the whole Skyline Drive and some of the northern end of the Blue Ridge Highway I'm now somewhat nonplussed by the mountains and views on the northern end of Skyline Drive. Plus I've shot them 5,000 times. But this made for a halfway-decent capstone so I shot it once more.

Again some of the brackets were a bit hot and APP1.4 obviously wasn't smart enough to not blend in the burned-out parts.

Anyway so my takeaway from this whole odyssey of going out there and shooting this year is that a wide-angle lens on either a cheap film camera or a cheap subframe is perfectly fine for getting decent landscape shots as long as you're not looking for a ton of pixels. Heck even a halfway-decent cellphone will do fine, as long as you're just looking for something around 8x10. The BB9550 has too much NR and insufficient DR for anything larger than that viewed up-close, even on my 24" monitor at work the NR is obvious. It would be fine for an 11x17" print viewed at some reasonable distance, say 6 feet or so. Film likewise is ok if you don't have the problem above with horizon-flaring, film will just make that look worse.

I'd say that 35mm film is somewhat better than a cellphone and a match overall for a cheap p&s but not as good as even a cheap DSLR shot raw. A DSLR (shot raw and shot at low ISO yet at adequate speed) is just too clean and carries too much fine-detail for film to compete with it in the overall sense. There is no question that if you are talking about in-camera image-processing, lens-correction, NR and so forth, that most people will get better shots much more easily with a DSLR than with film, and given the price of film and time involved in processing it's a no-brainer. But then you are entirely dependent on the camera for the color and fine-detail, and quite often it just isn't realistic and you're left with...what? Well, raw-shooting is a good start. Film is an interesting option that looks better from time to time, but it does have clear limits.

The problem is that if you wrap it all up together I still am unsure whether any of this is really a better option than just getting a good fullframe and a decent pair of zoom lenses. The only thing that makes it even "debatable" is the price of a good fullframe. If you are buying a cheap DSLR to take shots, you are getting a DSLR and you have the same limitations: it's still a relatively big, heavy and bulky camera and you still have to resort to raw shooting and software-manipulation to get the best IQ. The only question is whether the IQ is acceptable if the camera only costs say $200, compared to a $2k camera. Cellphones are cellphones (and the 9550 is very good for a cellphone), point & shoots are p&shoots (and the G9 is very good for a p&s) and film is film. Cellphones will always be far more convenient to carry and shoot than any other camera, and point & shoots will always have inferior IQ compared to any other digital camera, and the good ones aren't even cheaper than decent DSLRs on eBay. Each type has serious and unique pluses and minuses, strengths and weaknesses. The only thing they really have in common is the fact that they all cost money.

And I say that if you're really into photography don't waste your time with bad gear. But that doesn't mean that it is bad because it is cheap. It is *ALSO* not good because it is *expensive*. And clearly if it is too expensive you can't really afford to buy it and shoot it. But also if it is too bad you can't afford to buy & shoot it, likewise. It's just too much of a waste of time. That's why I think that more people should shoot film, buy a cheap SLR like the 500si and a cheap film scanner like the V300 and shoot and scan your own film. Get good with film. See what you can get out of film. Then you will have a better idea of what a good digital camera should give you. And it will only cost you maybe $200 worth of hardware plus say $200 worth of decent non-IS lenses, at the *most*. And if you choose them well you will be able to shoot those same lenses on a cheap DSLR. And then you can compare them *directly* to film, and see how good your DSLR is.

And honestly at this point I would say that overall you would probably find a good p&s like the G9 or the G11 -maybe even the SX130- to be the most cost-effective and portable answer but really they still have the same problems as DSLRs (they are still big, heavy, expensive and lacking in functionality compared to a cellphone) and they still have IQ limitations compared to DSLRs (they still have funky color because they are 10-bit cameras) and they still are just not wide enoug

South Dakota Highway 35 was a state route located in southeast South Dakota. This route was established around 1935, as a renumbering of South Dakota Highway 27. At that time, SD 27's northern terminus was at U.S. Highway 18; SD 35 was extended north to South Dakota Highway 42. The route was deleted in 1976. The segment south of U.S. 18 became part of a split South Dakota Highway 25; the segment to the north is unnumbered.

Wheel-A-While in Bismarck, North Dakota

Wheel-A-While was an indoor roller skating rink located near Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota at 1030 Weiss Avenue, where users would skate along to the biggest hit songs of the era.

It was a popular hangout, especially for high school-aged students. Wheel-A-While also featured a concession stand and other entertainment such as foosball. The business opened in 1975 and closed around 1986. Some consider Wheel-A-While to have been the last safe-place hangout for youths within the city.

I have posted so many photos of my skating exploits.
Now for something completely different.
Indoor skating?
Quads? (You know, the old style 4 wheel ones)
Disco music?
Flashing lights and a mirrored ball?
Yes!
It’s time to go back to the days of Junior High School.
This was IT!
The rink!
Couldn’t wait for couples skate.
Sweaty palms and all.
Romance rolling under flashing neon lights.
Ahhh, to be 14 again.

And I was tonight.

And like so many skates in the past…
…I sat out couples skate- lost my nerve.

The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift located in Scotland, UK, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It is named after the nearby town of Falkirk which is in central Scotland. The two canals were previously connected by a series of 11 locks, but by the 1930s these had fallen into disuse, were filled in and the land built upon them.

The plan to regenerate the canals of central Scotland to reconnect Glasgow with Edinburgh was led by British Waterways with support and funding from seven local authorities, the Scottish Enterprise Network, the European Regional Development Fund and the Millennium Commission. It was decided early on to create a dramatic 21st century landmark structure to reconnect the canals, instead of simply recreating the historic lock flight. Designs were submitted for a boat lift to link the canals, with the Falkirk Wheel design winning. As with many Millennium Commission projects the site includes a visitors' centre containing a shop, cafe and exhibition centre.

The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres (79 ft), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight-storey building. The Union Canal, however, is 11m higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel, and boats must pass through a pair of locks to descend from this canal onto the aqueduct at the top of the wheel. The aqueduct could not have been positioned higher due to conflicts with the historically important Antonine Wall.
